A detachable tow bar uses a spring-loaded locking mechanism to securely connect to the vehicle’s mounting bracket. Before attaching it, the locking mechanism is wound back using the handle to “charge” the lock. When inserted into the mounting bracket, the mechanism locks into place.
To remove the tow bar, the mechanism must be rewound using the handle. Each manufacturer’s towbar may operate slightly differently, but most detachable systems follow the same principle.
Most detachable tow bars include a key-operated lock on the handle. When locked, the handle cannot be operated, which prevents the tow bar from being removed from the vehicle.
The key number is normally stamped on the face of the lock barrel where the key enters. Over time this area can become dirty or worn, so the code may need a quick clean to make it visible.
The same key number is usually also stamped on the original key. Please note that numbers shown on the tow bar’s product label (such as model or specification numbers) are not the key code.
Once you have the key number, you can search for the code using the search box on our website or browse the available tow bar key series to order the correct replacement key.
It is normal for the key to not turn fully when the tow bar is not fitted to the vehicle. The lock is designed this way to prevent accidental operation of the handle when the tow bar is not attached.
Yes. The key barrel (lock cylinder) on detachable tow bars is often exposed to weather, road dirt and moisture when fitted to the vehicle, which can cause the lock to become stiff over time.
Even when the tow bar is removed and stored in the boot for long periods, the key barrel can dry out or become stiff from lack of use. Applying a small amount of PTFE-based lock lubricant into the keyhole and inserting the key several times will help distribute the lubricant and keep the lock operating smoothly.

Yes. If you have the key number, you can easily order additional spare keys cut to the same code. Having a spare key is recommended so the tow bar can still be removed if the original key is lost.
