eBike Battery Key Guide

Most eBike batteries are secured to the e-bike frame with a lock and key. The key releases the battery from its housing. If you’ve lost or damaged your e-bike battery key, or need a spare, Replacement Keys Ltd may be able to help.

Ordering a new eBike battery key

If you have a key code for your eBike battery

You can often find the key code in one of these places:

  • On a key code card or tag supplied with the bike when new
  • Stamped on the shaft of your original key
  • Stamped on the face of the battery lock (see below)
E-Bike battery lock face. Code 1817.
E-Bike battery lock face. Code 3214.
E-Bike battery lock face. Code 337.

How to order with a code

  1. Enter the code in the Search box (top-right of our website).
  2. When results appear, use the Lock Manufacturer filter (left-hand side) to narrow by lock or bike brand.

Common battery lock brands:

Popular eBike brands you can filter by: AXA, Bosch, Carrera, Cube, Giant, Raleigh, Suntour, Trek and Trelock.

Not sure which result is correct? Email a clear photo of your lock to ebikes@replacementkeys.co.uk along with your eBike and/or battery brand and they will advise whether they can cut the key you need.

If you don’t have a code for your eBike battery

  • If you don’t have the code and no existing key, your local eBike dealer may be able to read the code from the bike’s onboard system. This isn’t always possible, call the dealer first to check.
  • If you don’t have the code but do have an existing key, email a clear, well-lit photo of the key to ebikes@replacementkeys.co.uk and we'll advise if we can help.

Troubleshooting an existing eBike battery keys

My key enters the lock but will not turn, or only turns slightly

Try the following steps if the battery is securely attached to the eBike:

  • Check the key code. Make sure the code stamped on your key matches the code on the lock.
  • Lubricate the lock. Apply a suitable lock lubricant (e.g. WD-40 or a PTFE-based product) into the keyway.
  • Insert the key and move it gently back and forth (a sawing motion) to work lubricant between the internal pins.

See the lock lubrication guide for further advice on suitable lubricants.

My key does not enter the lock fully

  • Confirm the key code. Different code ranges can use different key profiles.
  • Check for obstructions. Inspect the keyhole for dirt, debris, or corrosion.
  • Free a seized lock. Internal pins may be seized if the battery has been fitted a long time. See lock unseizing instructions.

My key isn’t working

If the key inserts and turns but the battery won’t release:

  • Turning angle: on many eBikes the key only turns a small distance (often 90° or less) to release the battery.
  • Sprung vs non-sprung mechanisms: some models require holding the key while sliding the battery out; on others you turn then remove the battery separately, try both methods.
  • Physical obstructions: check for mud, grit or debris around the battery mount that may be stopping it from sliding free.

My key turns but the battery still won’t release

  • If the key turns freely but the battery doesn’t move, the release catch may not be fully disengaging, try gently wiggling the battery while turning the key.
  • Check any retaining clips or latches are not jammed and inspect for paint, corrosion or debris catching around the housing.

How to prevent lock or key problems

Maintenance tips to keep your eBike lock working smoothly:

  • Lubricate the lock every few months with a dry or light PTFE-based lock lubricant. Avoid thick oils or greases (they attract dust).
  • Apply lubricant directly into the keyway, then insert and remove the key several times to distribute it.
  • Keep the keyhole covered if your bike is stored outdoors to prevent moisture and grit getting in.
  • Never force a resisting key. Stop and apply lubricant before trying again.
  • Check regularly that the battery slides freely when removed/refitted.

For detailed guidance, see the Lock lubrication guide for recommended products and application steps.
