Detachable Tow Bar Guide

Disclaimer: The guide below is given for your information only and you should always ensure the tow bar is properly secured to the vehicle before setting off on a journey or towing anything.

A detachable tow bar is a hitch system that can be easily attached or removed, offering the flexibility to tow when needed and quickly detach when it's not in use.

How does a detachable tow bar work?

The detachable tow bar uses a sprung locking mechanism to securely connect to the car’s mounting bracket. Before attaching it, wind back the locking mechanism using the handle to “charge” it. When inserted into the mounting bracket, the mechanism locks in place. To remove the towbar, simply rewind the mechanism with the handle.

Each manufacturer’s tow bar may operate slightly differently - detailed instructions for popular brands are provided below. Even if your tow bar is factory-fitted, it’s likely made by one of the manufacturers listed below.

Do I need a Key?

Most detachable tow bars include a key lock on the handle. This key lock prevents the handle from being used to remove the towbar when locked.

How do I order a missing or extra key?

The key number is typically stamped on the face of the locking barrel near the keyhole. It may also be marked on your original key. Please note, the key code will not appear on any sticker labels. You can search for your key number in our search box at the top of this page or browse our tow bar keys here.

How to use the key.

The key’s sole purpose is to enable or disable the handle when the towbar is attached to the vehicle. It is normal for the key to not turn fully when the towbar is not fitted. This prevents accidental operation of the handle when the towbar is not in use.

To remove the detachable tow-ball, insert the key and rotate it clockwise by 90 degrees to the unlock position. Pull the green handle out and rotate it anti-clockwise as far as it will go (approximately 90 degrees), and the tow bar will release.

If it doesn't release immediately, hold the green handle in the turned position and jiggle the tow-ball or gently tap it with a hammer to help it work free. If the green handle doesn’t turn fully after the key has unlocked it, there’s a good chance the locking pin has seized. You will need to remove the spare wheel and assist in working it free from the back.

Troubleshooting

I cannot read the key code on the face of the tow bar tow bar lock.

If the tow bar has been fitted to a vehicle for an extended period, dirt and grime may accumulate on the lock's surface. Please use a cloth and some WD-40 to clean the face and reveal the code.

The tow bar key isn’t working

There may be several reasons why the key is not turning. Firstly, the key will only operate once the towbar is securely attached to the vehicle. Please refer to our manufacturer specific instructions or the instructions that came with your towbar. If you are still experiencing issues, please consult the other troubleshooting points.

My key enters the tow bar lock but will not turn or only turns a bit.

Assuming the tow bar is securely attached to the vehicle, here are some quick and easy troubleshooting steps to try:

  • Double-check that the key code on your key matches the one on the tow bar.
  • If the tow bar has been left attached to the vehicle or stored for an extended period, the lock may have dried out and accumulated road dirt. Apply a generous amount of WD-40 inside the lock and use the key in a sawing motion to help work the lubricant between the internal lock pins.

My key does not enter the tow bar lock fully.

  • Double-check that the key code on your key matches the one on the tow bar, as different code ranges use different-sized keys.
  • Check for any obstructions in the keyhole.
  • If the tow bar has been fitted to the vehicle for an extended period, the lock may have seized, preventing the internal pins from moving to allow the key entry. Please refer to our unseizing guide.

Difficulty Attaching Tow Bar

  • First, please refer to our manufacturer specific instructions or the instructions that came with your tow bar to familiarise yourself with its operation. The most common issue is that the tow bar is not in the ‘charged’ state. Check the indicators; the tow bar should display an ‘Unlocked’ or ‘Red’ indicator. Use the handle to recharge the system by winding the mechanism back.
  • Inspect the tow bar and the mounting plate on the vehicle for any dirt or damage. If the mounting plate has been left uncovered, it may have accumulated mud or debris.
  • If you have any doubts about whether the towbar is securely attached, do not use it and contact a tow bar professional.

Difficulty Detaching Tow Bar

If the tow bar is difficult to remove, ensure that the locking handle is fully released. While holding the handle in the release position, rock the tow-ball end back and forth towards the car. Once released, ensure that both the towbar and mounting plate are checked and cleaned.
